First Day of School Designated International Doom’s Day

In a landmark decision in The Hague last week, the oldest tribunal on the planet, The Thing of Gröenland, was forced to acknowledge the peoples’ will and designate the first day of the academic year as DOOM’s DAY! When pressed for details, President-Elect Ferris Bueller said, “Við erum að alast upp togetehr, the human race og við höfum uppgötvað mikið af því sem við vissum ekki. Við erum að finna leið okkar. Í stað þess að hugsa um Doom’s Day allan tímann, hugsa um hversu fallegt heimurinn er. Við erum…

First place was unanimously awarded to Emaline Gonzalez Thomas, a Dawson College student, for her piece about the contrast between traditional, Catholic, Latin-American beliefs about sexuality, and those held by young, modern North Americans. Her performance had the audience roaring with laughter, yet also moved to a beautiful, heavy silence at…

Three Little Peas

Marine Rivoal’s Three Little Peas is a book about friendship, family and trust. It takes place in an unknown garden in which plant life is characterized as grey and aseptic. Two little peas, a luscious, vibrant green, pop out of their pods of oppression to explore the hostile land. The two little peas, almost identical in form except for a few minute details requiring a lot of time to distinguish, brave the monsters lying beyond the safety of their pod. They scale up precipitous trees, ere under poisonous mushrooms and…

Microwaves at Vanier want your personal information*

It was a wintery springtime day at Vanier, it happened last week; a student discovered that the microwaves in Vanier College were spying on all of us. Isaac Dinotno, a student at Vanier, came to us to comment: “I know we always suspected that those machines were suspicious, but now, things are just getting out of hand!” Dinotno started. We asked how Dinotno was able to determine that the microwave was spying on him: “It was so spooky man! When I pressed the 2 button, the microwave knew right away…

Federal By-election Debate

Who should I vote for?… … the NDP… the local candidate didn’t speak a word of English during his time on stage. Well, just a little in the last five minutes, really. He was apologetic about it when I spoke to him afterward – he said his French is much better than his English, although our conversation went well in his second language. Green?… he’s the scrappiest of the bunch; definitely has his heart in it… but won’t they get tired of him being so earnest? The Liberals have the…

First intercollegiate slam poetry competition

Slam, or spoken-word poetry, is a growing practice among young adults in North America, and is replacing the classic image of a poet with a more modern version. Spoken-word competitions consist of a series of writers, or modern poets, who read their work aloud, turn by turn: changing the face of poetry, as it is no longer directed towards readers, but to an audience. This allows the author of a poem to employ different techniques to give them a greater control over rhythm, speed, tone of voice, etc., and entices…

Koriass Concert

As part of the Semaine de la francophonie, and International Women’s Week, Vanier College had the pleasure of inviting Emmanuel Dubois, better known by his stage name Koriass, to give a conference about feminism and its closely related subjects. Koriass is a Quebec rapper, interpreter, and composer, but most of all a “natural born feminist”. Every seat in the auditorium was occupied as exciting chatter filled the air. Koriass started his conference lightly by introducing the concept of the “boys club”. This is club is for all humans who are…
