Proud Boys are Marked as a Terrorist Group

On January 6th, 2021, a bunch of homegrown American terrorists stormed the United States Capitol building during an insurrection which became a failed coup. Several people died and others were injured. Among the insurrectionists were members of the alt-right, neo-fascist group, the Proud Boys. Two days before the fated insurrection, the leader of this group of neo-Nazis, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, was arrested for allegedly burning a Black Lives Matter banner belonging to Black church during a “Stop the Steal” protest two months ago. In the fallout of the Capital Riots, as it is being called, the FBI has been calling on the public to turn in participants they can identify in hopes of arresting and charging them. With every day, more and more individuals are being named and stopped by police for their involvement.

The Canadian government announced on Wednesday February 3rd, 2021 that they moved to classify the Proud Boys as a terrorist group on their official list of terrorist entities. This is a move that our American counterparts have yet to do, and the first of any kind that the Proud Boys have been labeled as so in any country in the world. The Capital Riots or Insurrection was not the first time that this group has run amok for in the past they have participated in the Unite the Right rally several years ago.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair declared that the decision to add them to the list was influenced by the “pivotal role” the group played during the riots. Among other groups on the list were Atomwaffen Division and the Base, along with other groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.
