Cheetahs Win Home Opener Against St-Jean

A quarter mile from campus, in a quiet backyard occasionally enlivened by fire engine sirens and homebound airliners, the roar of the crowd was heard at least three times from Vanier’s playing field… our men’s football team brought home their first win of the season at the opener!   Every time the crowd announced their approval with roaring enthusiasm, I wished I’d had the time and energy to be amongst the appreciative supporters in the stands – it sure sounded great!! Congratulations Cheetahs! I hope it’s the first of many…

Salutations Students!

To new and returning students alike, salutations!   As you enter Vanier to start a new semester, you’ll see swarms of students, cascading up and down hallways, perhaps looking for their next class. You’ll witness the long lines at the bookstore, alongside the massive chatter of the cafeteria. As you plod prudently through piles of students during your first days, you may be wondering: “What’s my place amidst all of this?”. Well, the answer to that incredibly specific hypothetical question is simple: CEGEP is a system that allows you to…

Indigenous Awareness Week

Photos: Courtesy of Student Services If you’ve ever attended a symposium or other similar event in the auditorium at Vanier College, then you’ve probably heard the following: “We acknowledge that this event takes place on Tio’tia:ke (where the currants meet / Montreal), which is situated on the traditional unceded territories of the Kanien’kehá:ka people, more commonly known as Mohawk. Tio’tia:ke was also a gathering place for many First Nations.” The college certainly makes a point of respecting and embracing First Nation culture and rights – and not just by repeating…

Fashion Revolution

Once upon a time—wait, no. There was no happy ending. It was a tragedy. It all started after the Rana Plaza disaster on the 24th of April in 2013, when an industrial complex in Bangladesh, housing five large garment factories supplying global brands, collapsed, killing over 1,000 people – and causing uproar from around the world, as citizens massively questioned the ethics of the clothing industry, and urged major companies to take action in assuring a safe, equitable, and humane fashion revolution. The week of April 24th is now international…

Speak Up – Intercollegiate Poetry Slam

Thursday, April 27th, five English cégeps competed at Speak Up, Montreal’s very first intercollegiate poetry slam, hosted by Vanier College. 14 poets – plus sacrificial poet and event founder, Nayem Alam – and an extremely wide variety of topics. First place was unanimously awarded to Emaline Gonzalez Thomas, a Dawson College student, for her piece about the contrast between traditional, Catholic, Latin-American beliefs about sexuality, and those held by young, modern North Americans. Her performance had the audience roaring with laughter, yet also moved to a beautiful, heavy silence at…

Expect the Unexpected Sports

Expect the Unexpected

One of the greatest sporting events of my life! About a month ago, I joined the Vanier Cheetahs cheerleading team for their final competition of the season at Regionals. There were seven teams at the event, all of them being colleges from Montreal and the Laurentians. Going into the event, I had no idea what to expect, as cheerleading is a whole other world compared to how it is illustrated in movies; and boy did these athletes impress. Cheerleading is a complex sport, much harder than it looks. Every time…

Salah and family’s Steelpan Band

On Thursday, the 23rd, Jake’s Mall was brightened by the sound of three members of the “Salah & Family Steelpan Band”. The trio played for about ninety minutes, and most of the songs they performed were modern-day pop and well-known, well-loved recent classics. If you were there, you would have recognized “Waka Waka” (by Shakira), and “Hold You” (by Gyptian), amongst at least a dozen songs. You can watch the trio playing Waka Waka on YouTube: http://tinyurl.com/SalahTrioWakaWaka The three people who played for us are all members of Salah’s band,…

First intercollegiate slam poetry competition

Slam, or spoken-word poetry, is a growing practice among young adults in North America, and is replacing the classic image of a poet with a more modern version. Spoken-word competitions consist of a series of writers, or modern poets, who read their work aloud, turn by turn: changing the face of poetry, as it is no longer directed towards readers, but to an audience. This allows the author of a poem to employ different techniques to give them a greater control over rhythm, speed, tone of voice, etc., and entices…
