Salah and family’s Steelpan Band

On Thursday, the 23rd, Jake’s Mall was brightened by the sound of three members of the “Salah & Family Steelpan Band”. The trio played for about ninety minutes, and most of the songs they performed were modern-day pop and well-known, well-loved recent classics.

If you were there, you would have recognized “Waka Waka” (by Shakira), and “Hold You” (by Gyptian), amongst at least a dozen songs. You can watch the trio playing Waka Waka on YouTube: http://tinyurl.com/SalahTrioWakaWaka

The three people who played for us are all members of Salah’s band, and members of his family as well. The young gentleman up front is Rashiyd, he’s been playing since he was 4 years old. Fatima and Miriyam, sisters to one another and aunts to Rashiyd, have been playing since they were 5. Salah started the pan program in 1991 and for the last 14+ years the two sisters have been teaching steelpan drumming in PSBGM and EMSB schools, namely Coronation, St. Monica, Westmount Park and John Grant High.

Fatima announced that they’re starting to build a Facebook page for the band but still have some work to do on it before it goes live. She also told us that the band is always ready for bookings, and that they perform for any occasion. For more information, you can reach them by email: fatimawilson@live.com

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the band for livening up my day, and congratulate Student Services for having great taste and for everything they do for us! – thank you!!

It’d be great to see the band again, and I hope others who enjoyed the show will help make that happen. To voice your opinion and help bring talent to our stage, please feel free to get in touch with Rowena Selby or Marya Grant.
