A Letter from a fellow Vanier student

Dear Readers, I’m Anora. I’m a writer and a photographer, wishing to pursue both professionally, and working towards that goal. I originally was going to write about my first week at Vanier, but honestly, it was nothing special – just different. Instead, I will focus on a few special moments in the first month of cegep at Vanier. So much has happened so far and it has been really different. To start off, I have been making many friends at school – though ironically, the majority of them are boys…

If you Prick us, do we not Bleed? Voices

If you Prick us, do we not Bleed?

On September 26th and 27th, Héma-Québec is hosting a blood drive at Vanier, but you won’t see me, or anyone like me, in line to donate. It’s not because we don’t want to, it’s because we aren’t allowed to. Why? Because we’re gay men. Like many blood-collection organizations worldwide, Héma-Québec has a 12-month deferral policy for men who have had sex with men (MSM). The organization, along with its nationwide equivalent, the Canadian Blood Services, claims this policy is fairer than the five-year deferral it replaced in August this year….

Vive la Virtual Reality! Voices

Vive la Virtual Reality!

Virtual reality is slowly becoming available in households across the globe. As it stands, there are currently three big contenders in the competition for VR dominance: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PSVR. However, none of these come cheap, and content is absurdly limited to this date. That said, one must be absolutely certain when deciding whether or not to adopt a VR headset, but fear not – I have taken the plunge for you and have come to a decisive conclusion on whether or not VR is worthy of the…

Welcome (Back) Vanier!

Welcome (back) Vanier College students! As you are engulfed by the sea of returning students, and by the swarm of newcomers searching for classrooms, please, do not feel that you have lost your way. You may be exactly where you need to be. Perhaps you’re beginning a program that will lead you straight to your dream job. That’s great! Perhaps, however, you’ll realize over the course of the semester that science, or communications, or social science, or commerce, or nursing, or [insert your program name here] doesn’t quite live up…

Private Garbage Collection

Many people are concerned with pollution and recycling, as evidenced by the endless supply of recycling bins we can see these days. Signs asking people to recycle more and more things are put up just about everywhere. This concern largely comes from the fact that many people are increasingly worried about the gross amount of waste continuously produced by humans. However, efforts to socially pressure one another into recycling everything yield very underwhelming results because too many of us simply don’t see any immediate personal benefit by doing it. An…

BDS McGill; Divisive Dogma, and a Reversal of Conclusions

February of this year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government endorsed a motion put forth by the Conservatives which condemns the BDS movement (boycotts, divestments and sanctions against the state of Israel). When Parliament voted, the motion passed by a landslide, with 229 votes in favour and 51 against. Meanwhile, the McGill University general assembly was having a vote of its own regarding BDS, only with emphatically different results. BDS McGill, a grassroots student movement put forth a motion in favour of boycotts, divestments and sanctions against Israel;…

Me and Seven Billion Others

While the human race began more than six million years ago, civilization and the development of cities have only existed for around six thousand years, and thenceforth humanity has created a series of group-level conflicts.  Regardless of small tribes and clan battles that have been in existence since humankind was born, the world has borne witness to at least 3000 wars in the last 3700 years, with roots often tied to ideological changes. Religions, nationalities, ethnicities, and many other categories could define the way of living of a whole society,…

Walls, Emails and A Bad Hair Day: The 2016 American Presidential Elections are a Joke

With the current President, Barack Obama, ending his final year as leader of The Land of The Free, the elections are just around the corner, and I believe that there has never been an election quite like it. From childish, racist insults and false accusations to comparing penile length and girth, this year’s presidential elections have morphed into what seems to be a Reality TV Show. Whatever is the most offensive or ‘’politically incorrect’’ is what gets the most attention. We are bombarded with sound bites and video clips of…

The Algerian Democracy: Myth or Reality? Voices

The Algerian Democracy: Myth or Reality?

I’ve always wondered why Algeria bears the official name, “People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria,” when the only democratic thing about the country is, well, its official appellation. In fact, the Democracy Index of 2014 classifies the regime as authoritarian, while the Freedom of the Press 2015 report assessed the country to be “Not Free.” Democratic? Yeah, right. It is not unknown either that corruption reeks from every rank of the country’s government and administration, nor that the laws are often—if not always—amended in a way to benefit a few, to…

Investing Selflessy

These days, most people fail to see the virtue in simply storing one’s earnings in a savings account. It is sometimes called “hoarding money” and is often seen as selfish, but there is a very strong justification, which, interestingly, is both selfish and altruistic, for putting savings in a simple index fund. The biggest reason behind the high standard of living of western countries, and other rich countries, is the high amount of capital invested in these countries. This capital consists of the accumulated wealth of many people in the…
