7,000 Students Share 1,000 Lockers

Were you lucky enough to be assigned a locker this semester? If you were, count yourself blessed! – two-thirds of your fellow students don’t have one.   An informal survey of the locker rooms at the end of the first week of classes revealed that roughly 40% of lockerettes are standing empty and unused. If you own one of these, will you kindly put a lock on it? If you’ve decided that you’re not going to use your storage unit this semester, how about surrendering it so that someone who’s…

Fashion Revolution

Once upon a time—wait, no. There was no happy ending. It was a tragedy. It all started after the Rana Plaza disaster on the 24th of April in 2013, when an industrial complex in Bangladesh, housing five large garment factories supplying global brands, collapsed, killing over 1,000 people – and causing uproar from around the world, as citizens massively questioned the ethics of the clothing industry, and urged major companies to take action in assuring a safe, equitable, and humane fashion revolution. The week of April 24th is now international…

Expect the Unexpected Sports

Expect the Unexpected

One of the greatest sporting events of my life! About a month ago, I joined the Vanier Cheetahs cheerleading team for their final competition of the season at Regionals. Going into the event, I had no idea what to expect, as cheerleading is a whole other world compared to how it is illustrated in movies; and boy did these athletes impress. Cheerleading is a complex sport, much harder than it looks. Every time…

First intercollegiate slam poetry competition

Slam, or spoken-word poetry, is a growing practice among young adults in North America, and is replacing the classic image of a poet with a more modern version. Spoken-word competitions consist of a series of writers, or modern poets, who read their work aloud, turn by turn: changing the face of poetry, as it is no longer directed towards readers, but to an audience. This allows the author of a poem to employ different techniques to give them a greater control over rhythm, speed, tone of voice, etc., and entices…
