Montreal’s Dollar Cinema Voices

Montreal’s Dollar Cinema

A few days ago, I decided to go to the Dollar Cinema, a lesser-known, underdog theater. A repertory cinema is a cinema that plays either foreign movies or simply movies that are old, or fresh out of the mainstream cinema (ex: Moana was playing there a week ago because it was out of theaters for a bit of time). Bundled with the cheap price of just over ten dollars for 2 tickets, a large popcorn, and a drink, in terms of monetary efficiency, it is a steal. The selling point…

Whistling D’ici! Voices

Whistling D’ici!

About ten years ago, I found myself the owner of a large and varied collection of objects my uncle accumulated over time. I immediately brought the three-foot long chromed truck horn (KAHOOOOOOOOOOOGA) and the 70 year old kerosene blow-torch (PFFFFFFFFFFFFT) home with me. Stuff like that, you can’t find it unless you’re really, really lucky. My uncle told me the blow-torch belonged to my grandfather and it’s a direct piece of my family’s history (but he’s such a liar, I really don’t believe him) – now in my safe-keeping; I…

Chuck Palahniuk

At first glance, Chuck Palahniuk is just some guy who used to work on a truck assembly line and got lucky with a mondo big book about guys beating each other up, starting a gang and completely getting out of control. Every person I know who’s heard of Fight Club, but not watched it, thinks it’s about fighting. Without looking at his work, Chuck Palahniuk easily gets pegged as a grown up high school bully who got lucky. But that’s sooooooo wrong. Chuck’s body of work elicits your most sensitive…

Salah and family’s Steelpan Band

On Thursday, the 23rd, Jake’s Mall was brightened by the sound of three members of the “Salah & Family Steelpan Band”. The trio played for about ninety minutes, and most of the songs they performed were modern-day pop and well-known, well-loved recent classics. If you were there, you would have recognized “Waka Waka” (by Shakira), and “Hold You” (by Gyptian), amongst at least a dozen songs. You can watch the trio playing Waka Waka on YouTube: http://tinyurl.com/SalahTrioWakaWaka The three people who played for us are all members of Salah’s band,…

Fifty Meters & Fourteen Thousand Thoughts

“On your mark, get set…” the loudspeaker announces. I’m on the starting block, waiting for the signal to tell me to begin the race. It’s a small race – only fifty meters, but I’m nervous anyway. I am stronger than my competitors, but I’m anxious none the less. Family and friends are watching in the crowd. I smile at them, but I’m still jittery. I think about receiving the gold medal, but I become even more uneasy. I imagine being in the pool, gliding farther and farther with each stroke….

WHOSE BODY IS THIS?

— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — I love my body. I’ve lived in it for a long time. It freaked me out when I found out I don’t own it. Seriously. Looking at what’s going on in our world, this is what I’ve come to realize: my body isn’t mine. This physical me, it’s not ME. When I’m out cold, head in the stars, dead to the world, unconscious, –flatlined–… it belongs to the…

Break Free

I want to escape Something calls me Out of these blank walls I want to break free Fiddling my hands and feet The teacher’s voice bores me What’s he talking about?  Oh, yeah, history Look, a window! Let’s ram through it  Fly like a bird  I’m sure there’s nothing to it We can soar across the sky Full of opportunities To London, Tokyo, anywhere you please! Oh, crap, the teacher’s calling my name What’s the question again? This is so lame Written By: Alaina Roberts

Trump’s Presidency and the Women’s March in Montreal

It was the 20th of January, Trump’s inauguration did not come with a cheer because many people have been very distraught as to how their “democracy” could have failed them. Their pain is sometimes projected outwardly towards the people celebrating with MAGA hats as well as through vandalism in various parts of the USA and even more surprising to me, in Montreal. On the 21st, many protests ensued in many countries and this time in solidarity with the Women’s March in Washington. There was even one in Montreal in which…

Cool Weather, Warm Hearts

While we were busy with the semester, winter somehow managed to sneak in. Soon enough we will trade our shirts for sweaters and ordering our coffee hot instead of iced. The seasons are changing and maybe it’s time for us to make a change too. When the breeze brings a new chill in with it, we are fortunate enough to be able to find comfort and warmth with loved ones, but it is always important to remember those who are not able to do so. Surprisingly, on the list amongst…
