Love Can Kill

A shrill cry echoed in the mist…

“Sarah, hurry up!” I yell at my sister, Francesca. She has been in her room getting dressed for our camping trip for hours. Can you believe it? For our CAMPING trip! However, I’m not surprised. She always overdresses for every single event ever since we were younger. She and I are complete opposites. She’s the typical popular girl who has thousands of friends, plays on the volleyball team and has a boyfriend (who I dislike). In contrast, I am an outcast. I barely have any friends and spend most of the time studying. Even though we aren’t similar, we’re still best friends.

“What is taking you girls so long?!” My mom shouts from the car.

Ah, now our mom is mad. Thanks a lot, Fran.

“I’m here, I’m here!” My sister says frantically while coming down the stairs with 12 pounds of makeup on, hair curled, and the most extra outfit I’ve seen.

I groan at sight before grabbing my backpack, closing all windows, and heading out the door.

I enter the passenger seat and let my sister sit in the back with her 4 suitcases for the week trip.

“Do you guys have everything you need?” My mom asks.

We both nod, and the engine starts. Thus, the road trip begins to Lake Morena… mu ed whispers

I wake up and notice the landscape change from the bright city of San Diego to the green-filled forests of San Diego. The forests are filled with eucalyptus trees. My dad’s favourite. Well, it used to be his favourite. He actually died while fighting in the US Army a few years ago. Man, I miss him so much. He was a great father. However, I truly believe God always takes the good ones away first.

Turning away from the scenery, I notice my mom’s hazel eyes drooping from how tired she is. She came home last night from a late-night shift just so she could take us out on this trip for the week. Honestly, I am so grateful for her because she works so hard as a single parent just so she can provide whatever my sister and I need. I turn to the back and notice my sister whispering angrily on the phone. It is most likely her boyfriend, Alfred. He is a psychopath. I say this because he needs to be around my sister 24/7 and gets all jealous if she hangs out with anyone, even her own family! I don’t understand why my sister hasn’t left him yet. She can easily get anyone she wants with her looks like Megan Fox. Love truly does make you blind…

Finally, after hours, we arrive at the campsite. I look up at the sign and notice how dirty it is. Does anyone ever actually come to this place?

I get out of the car and help my sister with her suitcases while mom takes hers from the trunk. You might wonder where mine is but, I only brought a backpack.

“Mom, are you sure this is the right place?” My sister says, “It looks like an abandoned cabin.”

“I checked with the Airbnb owner. It has to be,” My mom says, “It’s just camping. Your standards shouldn’t be so high for a campsite.”

Usually, I agree with her, but Francesca has a point. This place is the definition of creepy.

We walk up to the cabin, and my mom checks under the Welcome mat for the key. She unlocks the door and pushes it open.

Instant dust hit me and my sister’s face. The cabin is all dark, but the light from the ceiling window lets me see all the furniture. There are random portraits of goats, and the furniture consists of a dining table in the small kitchen, a grey sofa in the living room near an old fire stove, and a rocking chair in between the kitchen and living room. I spot two doors near the corner living room, indicating the bedroom and the bathroom. This place is definitely small, but it’s all we can afford at short notice.

My mom switches the light on, and the place still looks freaky. Due to this, I face my sister and see that she is already staring at me.

She mouths, “There is no way we can stay here for more than a day..”

“At least we have one bedroom, so we don’t need to be scared at night.” I mouth back.

“That’s your biggest worry?!” She whispers, “Look at these awful goat pictures.” I laugh, and we head to our bedroom.

The bedroom isn’t as bad as the rest of the house. There is a huge king-sized bed with an old wooden bed frame, a wall mirror across from the bed, and a closet in the corner of the room. After grabbing our pyjamas, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, we put all our things in the closet to get ready for bed.

I walk into the bathroom after my sister and mom are finished with their business. scrub scrub

I brush my teeth at a faster rate than before because I am too scared to be in this bathroom alone. After a good minute of brushing, I bend down and rinse my mouth out with the water. As I get back up, I notice from the corner of my eye that the cabin door is open. Did we forget to lock it? That’s weird. I turn on the sink and proceed to go close the door. After closing it, I head back to the bedroom.

My sister has already fallen asleep in the middle, with my mom on the right side of the bed. Of course, they left me with the scariest side of the bed facing the door. However, I am too tired to be scared. For this reason, I doze in a peaceful sleep…

I turn to my right while sleeping and notice the space next to me is empty. I open my eyes and see that Fran is no longer there… Maybe she’s in the bathroom? I go back to sleep.

A shrill cry echoed in the mist...

Immediately, my eyes shoot open. What on earth is that? I turn to Francesca to see if she hears the same noise. But she wasn’t there. Instantly, my heart begins to beat faster than before. I poke my mom several times, and in response, she wakes up.

“What’s wrong?” She grumbles in a sleepy voice.

“Mom, I just heard someone screaming, and Francesca hasn’t returned to bed since two hours ago.”

My mom gets up with panic in her face, “Let’s go look outside.”

We walk outside barefoot and see Alfred holding what looks to be a knife staring down at a body. The body belongs to Francesca. My mom lets out a cry, and my body becomes paralyzed. This is all a dream. This can’t be real. She was just sleeping next to me a few hours ago. I try to snap out of what I think is an illusion, but it was all real, in the flesh. Anger is pumping through my blood. How can he do this to her? I know he’s crazy, but to kill your own girlfriend?

I walk towards him and take the knife out of his hand. He doesn’t move and seems numb.

“HOW CAN YOU DO THIS, YOU PIECE OF S***,” I yell frantically with tears strolling down my face. He didn’t respond. I look down at her and notice the stab in her stomach. The blood wasn’t stopping. My head is pounding. I can’t see things straight. He deserves to die. I look up again and stab Alfred right in the heart. I can’t control my actions anymore. I keep stabbing. He’s dead, but I continue. I want him to feel my pain. He falls down next to her.

Realizing the situation in front of me, I faint.

door unlocking

“Someone has come to see you. Get up!” The prisoner guard yells.

I wake up and notice I’m in a cell. So, it wasn’t all a dream. I walk towards the door, and the prisoner guard handcuffs my hands behind my back.

He leads me to a small room, takes the handcuffs off, and asks me to wait inside for the visitor.

I take a seat, and the door unlocks again. It’s Alfred. How can he be here? I stabbed him to the point where he wasn’t breathing. Am I crazy? All these thoughts are circling through my head while he walks towards me.

“Surprised?” He says with a creepy grin on his face.

“How are you alive? I killed you that night.” I yell with frustration.

“You actually didn’t. You hit a spot that wasn’t damaging, and it resulted in me fainting. After waking up, I noticed your mom still on the stairs, and I killed her, so the blame would all fall on you.” He says while laughing.

Did he kill my mom too? I get up on the table and attempt to strangle him in anger.

“HELP, SHE’S TRYING TO KILL ME TOO!” Alfred yells.

The police guard comes rushing in, handcuffs me, and aggressively pulls me out of the room.

“HE’S LYING! HE KILLED MY MOM AND SISTER!” I scream while he takes me out.

The last thing that I see is Alfred’s smile. That wicked smile…
