The Squirrel Struggle is Real

Vanier College is growing itself a green thumb. Actually, make that plural – more than one hand is responsible for the success of the Vanier Collective Gardens. The gardens really began to sprout around campus two years ago, and have since flourished to the point of being considered “a part of Vanier’s educational landscape and educational worth” and of gaining recognition from the city of Montreal, says Myriam Mansour, Sustainability Major Coordinater and leader of the garden project. Mansour’s enthusiasm about the future of this endeavor is contagious, especially when…

Watching you speeding off, A caterpillar faster than a centipede. Listening to your announcements, A bionic woman known to Man. Feeling your trembling body, The rumble of a rocket’s take-off. Smelling your new, fresh fragrance, A pine tree hanging in a car. Tasting innovation, Tomorrow is today, Today is tomorrow. Written By: Katherine Willcocks April 2016

Science Week – Pluto: To be, then not to be, a Planet

Remember learning the names of the nine planets of the solar system back in elementary school? Did you memorize them with the phrase “Man Very Early Makes Jars Stand Up Nearly Perpendicular”? You may not be that old yet, but things have already changed. Since 2006, children are taught that “Man Very Early Makes Jars Stand Up Neatly”. Women’s Week: Gold-Medal Olympian at Vanier

A number of Vanier students can now boast about having held an Olympic gold medal in their hands, thanks to Caroline Ouellette’s inspiring visit to Vanier in honour of International Women’s Week. Ouellette has participated in the last four Winter Olympics, bringing home four gold medals with the national hockey team – the most recent of which, won in Sochi in 2014, was earned while she was captain. She is also a player for the Canadiennes (formerly the Montreal Stars), a professional-level team on the NWHL. Her talk aimed to…

Slam Poetry Contest – Speak Up Vanier!

Vanier College will be hosting its very own slam poetry competition on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 7pm, in the Auditorium. First prize: iPad Mini Slam, or spoken-word poetry, is a growing practice among young adults in North America, and is replacing the classic image of a poet with a more modern, hip version. Spoken-word competitions consist of a series of writers, or modern poets, who read their work aloud, turn by turn. This changes the face of poetry, as it is no longer read; spoken-word is not directed towards…

Our Country’s Good – Review

In the 1780’s, most people in Britain were not willing to give up their daily comforts to embark on a lengthy, trying journey to some far away colony to start a new, rough life. Not everyone had the free will to be able to refuse to participate in British colonization. In fact, Britain sent convicts to New South Wales (among other colonies) to serve as pioneers. This was also an attempt to eradicate the lower class of criminals from British cities. In “Our Country’s Good”, a play adapted from the…
