Roses of Heliogabalus: the beauty in the details.

The Victorian era was marked by many paintings such as Rossetti’s “Proserpine”, Millais’ “Ophelia” and Hunt’s “The Awakening Conscience”. However, “Roses of Heliogabalus”, painted by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1888 is the one I prefer. It depicts a remarkably facetious scene, the scandalous party thrown by Heliogabalus, or Elagabalus. Heliogabalus was a Roman emperor who rose to power at fourteen years old and was assassinated at eighteen. His short reign of four years was punctuated with numerous scandals, one of them being the banquet during which he drowned his guests…

A Brief History of Black History Month

February has come upon us once more which means that it is Black History Month, which happens to occur during the shortest month of the year of all things. As Canadians, our history is often whitewashed and scrubbed clean of all notions of enslaved peoples. Many of us have been led to believe that Canada was a paragon who did not have enslaved peoples nor enslavers. Once again, I must be the bearer of bad news as research has shown that our country did indeed host enslaved peoples. During this…

Legault Refuses to Help the Homeless

As of the beginning of January, Legault’s government set a curfew that lasted from eight pm until five am and that would be in place for at least a month. However, that date has inevitably been extended. With this strict rule in place, whose monetary penalty ranges from one to six thousand dollars, came a series of exceptions in order to accommodate people. Exceptions for front line health care workers who work late hours as well as those who finish a late shift and have difficulty making it home before…

Air Passengers Rights in the Supreme Court

On the 23rd of December, the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear an appeal stemming from the Federal Court of Appeal based on the Air Passengers Rights Group v. Canadian Transportation Agency (2020) case. The APR was seeking an order from a court to oblige the CTA to remove a statement from their website concerning cancelled flight refunds. The CTA had stated on their website that Canadian Airlines could offer “travelling vouchers” or travel credits for future air travel to passengers whose flights had been cancelled due to the…

Proud Boys are Marked as a Terrorist Group

On January 6th, 2021, a bunch of homegrown American terrorists stormed the United States Capitol building during an insurrection which became a failed coup. Several people died and others were injured. Among the insurrectionists were members of the alt-right, neo-fascist group, the Proud Boys. Two days before the fated insurrection, the leader of this group of neo-Nazis, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, was arrested for allegedly burning a Black Lives Matter banner belonging to Black church during a “Stop the Steal” protest two months ago. In the fallout of the Capital Riots,…

New Mental Health Initiative on Campus

With the pandemic, many of us have been confined to our households and take most of our classes online. Being in quarantine has led to the detriment of the mental health of a good proportion of the population, including us students. Reaching out to the right services seems unattainable and confusing at times, which is where the VCSA has stepped in. Our student union has purchased for all current full-time day-time division students a subscription to the Empower Me virtual application, which means that access to the application comes to…

Sex and Relationships During Quarantine: A Conversation Amongst Friends Voices

Sex and Relationships During Quarantine: A Conversation Amongst Friends

In my first article of the semester, which was titled “Loves and Laments from Self-Isolation,” I commented on the romanticisms of the early days of “Quarantine.”  Speaking on the concept of “romanticism,” I had stated, “I’m not referring to those lovely serenades from my ever-so-crass tinder matches […]. I will admit that the dating scene during quarantine is another topic worth exploring though, albeit in a separate article.” You guessed it folks! You are currently reading that “separate article!” Stay-at-home orders became a thing in mid-March of 2020, thereby opening…

GIRLS AND GAYS (and everyone else) AGAINST PAYWALLS

I try to write an essay, every single academic article offered by Google Scholar is paywalled. I burst out into the Beauty and the Beast song to console my aching heart. Tale as old as time… I am only half-joking. I don’t burst into songs every time. However, this whole academia being paywalled to death is a tale as old as time that every student has had to deal with at some point in their academic careers. Research articles are routinely placed behind paywalls that are inaccessible to most students,…
