The exploited loophole in the 13th Amendment

The emancipation proclamation of 1863 was supposed to be the end of slavery in America; however, it was not until 1865 that Congress passed the 13th amendment of the United States constitution. According to National Archives, it states that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”.
