A MAJOR newsflash! A discussion about College-Wide Majors at Vanier

At Vanier, we have a range of various College-Wide Majors available to students of any program. In essence, according to Alan Wong, the coordinator of the Women and Gender Studies Major, “sub-programs that Vanier students may take in conjunction with and to complement their primary program of studies”. These Majors assure that students can develop their expertise in an interdisciplinary field that they can then use within their university studies, future employment, as well as their personal lives. Participating in one or multiple of these Majors allows students to acquire a diploma alongside their Diploma of College Studies, which demonstrates their success in a/multiple focused Major subject(s).

Vanier College offers five brilliant and varied College-Wide Majors:

Eastern European and Slavic Studies

Indigenous Studies

Jewish Studies

Sustainability Studies

Women’s and Gender Studies

These fields of study give students unique and pointed perspectives on their Majors subject while fulfilling their course requirements through a combination of the General Education (English, French, and Humanities), complementary, and primary program courses they are taking and/or have already completed. Which leads me to one of many advantages of these Majors, which is that there are no extra courses needed to fulfill the requirements! Ultimately, while not full programs, the College-Wide Majors add value to a student’s education by helping them grow an area of knowledge that enables them to navigate, stand out, and achieve success in their chosen field.
