Vanier College Introduces New Peer Support Network

Vanier students looking for mental and emotional support from their peers can now get immediate help. As part of a new unique program at the cegep level, student volunteers who received free professional training over the summer will offer confidential support to their peers such as active listening. The support network will be available as of the first day of classes at Vanier scheduled for August 20th.

“This is a win-win situation for everyone involved. Volunteers receive excellent training experiences and certification opportunities while students in need can get an immediate friendly ear and support from their fellow students,” said Ermine Paronyan, Coordinator of the Vanier Peer Support Network.

As part of the Vanier College Peer Support Network (VPSN) students will be able to get help in terms of dealing with a wide-range of issues such as academic concerns, relationship issues and financial problems. The initiative is funded via the support of the Vanier College Students Association.

“The hope is that by providing social support directly to students, the VPSN will be able to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help for certain problems. By seeking help from their peers students don’t have to feel alone in times of difficulty and can be given appropriate support, resources and referrals if necessary to help cope with their situation. This is especially important given the government cutbacks to the health and education sectors,” said Ermine Paronyan.

Vanier students wishing to make an appointment to see someone at the VPSN can book an appointment at www.vanierpeersupport.com, or by sending an email to vpsn@vaniercollege.qc.ca
