Women In Science: Project Prep

Women in science is a reality that is constantly being discussed, and therefore, historians and scientists have deeply searched into the scientific endeavors and accomplishments of women. Many influential female scientists have illuminated new branches of knowledge in the 19th century, such as Ada Lovelace, Marie Curie, and Maria Montessori. Of course, women’s contribution has never stopped. Tu Youyou and May-Britt Moser and many others have shared their accomplishments with the world during the 21st century. Vanier College proudly would like to celebrate the presence of women in this field,…

Get Up, Get Involved!

Whether out of good-heartedness, pure boredom, or a need to complete S.T.A.R. Hours, volunteering can be a rewarding experience – and a good way to keep busy. Plus, it looks great on university applications and on your C.V. There are so many places to go, and things to do, that it can be difficult to choose where to share your energy. Vanier Holocaust Commemoration: What Have We Learned?

“The World has not changed enough.” That’s what Ziv Nevo Kulman, the Israeli Consul General, told the small audience gathered in Vanier’s conference room for the college’s 24th annual Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony. Several distinguished guests made an appearance on the 13th of April, including Mr. Kulman, representatives from Germany and Austria, as well as several first and second-generation Holocaust survivors. The theme of the ceremony, and of Vanier’s Holocaust Symposium Week, was “Fear of the Other”, a theme which was frequently connected to current events around the world. Perhaps a…

The Squirrel Struggle is Real

Vanier College is growing itself a green thumb. Actually, make that plural – more than one hand is responsible for the success of the Vanier Collective Gardens. The gardens really began to sprout around campus two years ago, and have since flourished to the point of being considered “a part of Vanier’s educational landscape and educational worth” and of gaining recognition from the city of Montreal, says Myriam Mansour, Sustainability Major Coordinater and leader of the garden project. Mansour’s enthusiasm about the future of this endeavor is contagious, especially when…

Sacred Geometry: The Hidden Science of the Universe

Imagine a world in which everything—from the music we listen to, to the buildings we live in, to the scientific concepts we study—comes from one single source: a geometrical shape. Hard to believe? Think again: that’s exactly what sacred geometry is all about. It’s a topic that Vanier student Tara Santavicca has had a keen interest in for a while now—and she decided to share it with the Vanier community. On Thursday, March 24th, the young Science student held a talk at the auditorium, entitled “Sacred Geometry: The Framework to…

Strength in the Spotlight: Feminism in the Limelight

The F-word could be heard all over Vanier – all over the world, in fact – during the Week of March 7th. Not the usual F-word of course (although that one too was likely used often within the halls of the college as students received their midterm grades). Feminism was the word of interest throughout the week, as countries across the globe celebrated International Women’s Day. Naturally, Vanier took part in the movement, hosting its annual Women’s Rights Symposium, this year called Defying Categories. Thursday morning, both presentations discussed various…
