The Dark Truth Behind Black Friday and How to Combat It

With Thanksgiving around the corner just south of the Canadian border, industries have started promoting their Black Friday deals. A tradition that is rooted in the United States has found its way into Canada, in an effort to keep Canadian shoppers from contributing to foreign markets as opposed to their own. This being said, the excess consumption of goods and fast fashion on this day is no friend to our deteriorating climate. With the rise of consumerism surrounding the Holiday season, shoppers seek to get their shopping done on Black…

Fair Trade Campus Week Campus

Fair Trade Campus Week

During the final week of October, Vanier Sustainability celebrated the fact that Vanier is a fair trade campus. Volunteers participated in booths and activities throughout the week, and shared free fair trade coffee (hot and cold) and chocolate fondue. In the D-cafeteria, all coffees and most teas are fair trade, and Jake’s has fair trade coffee and tea options also. Select snacks and chocolate brands sold on campus are fair trade as well. When a product is certified as fair trade, it means the workers and farmers producing the product…

Sick

We were born to watch Her burn In the hands of selfish Men Without faith, hearts or concern, For the life around them Since money doesn’t grow on trees, What exactly is their use? Not one of them cares, nor sees That our purpose is not Abuse How our messed up weather, Foreshadowed by the first crown and throne, By those who think they can control Her, Yet are weaker than a lifeless stone   The Earth will go on. With us or without Weather the birds still sing their…

Tripping over Thrifting: An Economic and Environmental Paradox

“I’m gonna pop some tags. Only got twenty dollars in my pocket,” sings Macklemore in his famous song, “Thrift Shop.” He talks about saving money and bagging ninety-nine cent items at a thrift shop, yet, little did he know that, six years later, we’d be lucky to find one item for twenty dollars (without tax of course). It seems to be the case that, back when Macklemore released his song in 2013, retail stores were the place to buy the latest trends and to get “tricked by a business,” as…

Being Smart About your Scare: How to be Sustainable this Halloween

As children, October’s arrival meant but one thing: Halloween. We counted down the nights, and had been working on our costumes for months on end. Oh, and the candy wasn’t bad either. However, nowadays, the only scary thing about Halloween is the carbon footprint it leaves. Costumes play a significant role in the increase of damage to the environment. That shiny new costume you’ve had your eye on is not the best option to go with, as it was probably mass produced, thus damaging the environment. This Halloween, consider making…

Organize, Organize, Organize—Till Climate Action’s Disorganized

“We are forgetting how to give presents,” lamented Theodore Adorno. “Instead we have charity, administered beneficence, the planned plastering over of society’s sores.” And more, our capacity to give presents outside of harshly regimented periods: birthdays, holidays, anniversaries—has dissipated. This is a more general loosening of a feeling of autonomy. The sense that we might act on our own, outside of regimented periods, that we might give, provide, care, on our own, has been systematically substituted by top-down control through our traditions and through our institutions. At the moment there…

What Do You do for The Environment?

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Do any of these words ring a bell? Well, if you were brought up in the 90’s, or even in the 2000’s, you were most probably taught about the 3Rs of recycling: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Now, let’s look more closely into our daily lives. Do you do anything to help protect the environment? You may think you already do enough by categorizing the waste in your household according to the correct triage system. Or you might go “above and beyond” and opt for a shower instead…

Save Yourself

I’m a human being and, I assume, however risky that might be these days, that you are too. This article is one amongst many about climate change. I know it’s a very hot topic (pun intended) right now and you already know all there is to know about it. I won’t try and moralize you about polar bears, or bees or even compost. This article isn’t about that, it’s about us; it’s about you. We, as a species, emerged many millions of years ago in the dank and wild caves…
