Party in the VCSA

Wednesday, September 2nd, the school’s front lawn flooded with Vanier students, music, games, free t-shirts, and free food in the name of the annual VCSA (Vanier College Students’ Association) Welcome Back Barbecue. Every year, the VCSA kick starts the autumn semester by spoiling the VCSA members (essentially, the entire student body) with hot dogs from the Vanier-renowned restaurant, Decarie Hot Dog, as well as with free, custom-designed Vanier t-shirts. The lines these giveaways create seem endless at most VCSA events, but, as usual, they moved quickly during the barbecue.

This season’s festivities also featured dessert (Freezies), and music that got the crowd dancing. Narcity Montreal, a popular blog that appeals to many young, college-aged adults, was present at the event, giving away free t-shirts and memorabilia. The VCSA council members outdid themselves by ordering a Bungy-Trampoline, allowing students to jump and flip on individual trampolines, giving them enough height to really appreciate the spectacle that came of having over one thousand partying students out on the school’s front lawn. One could, after recuperating from the bouncing, attempt to take out a friend (or foe) in a simili-sumo wrestling match while donning the hot, sweaty costumes that were shared by the participants. To take one’s mind off the match, one had the opportunity to lose themselves in a childhood favorite: a bouncy ride slide race. The smiles on the students’ faces as they came down the slide were comparable to those in the Mastercard priceless moments commercials.
Of course, there’s generally a catch on anything that is presented as ‘free’, and this event is no exception. Naturally, the student body paid for the event through an optional fee that is added on to the cost of tuition. This money goes towards student oriented activities, governed by the VCSA executive council. Speaking of which, elections for said council are coming up; be sure to keep an eye out for debates and voting information!
